Archive analyses to an external storage device

An administrator can archive analyses and the samples that are associated with the analyses to an external storage device.

This procedure applies only to Ion Reporter™ Server.

IMPORTANT! Before you start this procedure, ensure that all users are signed out of Ion Reporter™ Software and that no processes are running on the Ion Reporter™ Server. Ion Reporter™ Server is not available to users during the archive process.

You cannot archive analyses or samples that are currently in use. That is, an analysis must have a status of Successful and actions such as downloading VCF files, or uploading samples to a analysis must not be in progress. Analyses that are shared with another member of the Ion Reporter™ organization also cannot be archived.

If an analysis is shared with an organization, the analysis can be archived only in the source organization. Samples in the analysis will be not be archived because samples remain common between the source and target organization. To archive samples, first unshare the analysis.

Before you begin this procedure, the paths to the server directory or external device and the directory to which the archives must be configured.
  • You must have an external storage device that is mounted to your Ion Reporter™ Server to archive analyses to the device.

  • If you have a new Ion Reporter™ Server or upgrade from a previous version, you must specify a storage location for archiving samples and analyses in Ion Reporter™ Server.

IMPORTANT! Change archivalMountPath=/tmp/ to archivalMountPath=/storage IP address/ in the ionreportermanager/server/server.properties file, then restart the Tomcat server.

To check the data that you archived, go to the storage location of the archived data, which is set up in the /share/apps/IR/ionreportermanager/server/server.properties file as archivalMountPath.

If you have questions about the Tomcat server, contact your Field Support Engineer or Field Bioinformatics Support representative.

  • You can only archive samples if no processes are active on the server. For example, if an analysis is running, or new sample uploads are in progress.

  • After the archive process starts, users cannot use the Ion Reporter™ Server until the archive process is complete.

IMPORTANT! Before you start this procedure, ensure that all users are signed off. Ion Reporter™ Server is not available to users during the archive process.

  1. In the Analyses tab, select one or more analyses that you want to archive.
  2. Click Actions, then select one of the following choices:

    Option

    Description

    Archive

    Archive the analysis alone.

    Archive with Samples

Archive the analysis and all samples in the analysis.

Note: You can only archive the analysis and the samples that were used by that analysis, if no other analyses used those samples.

  3. Click Yes in the Confirm Batch Archive dialog box to begin the archive process for the selected samples. If any processes are running on the server, you will receive a message that contains information about the number of processes that are in progress. Wait until the processes are completed before you proceed. The Archival Manager screen shows the progress of the archive.
  4. (Optional) To stop the archive process, click Abort.

To prevent a loss of data, if you archive multiple analysis you can only abort the archive process if none of the archival procesess are complete. For example, if three archives are in progress and two archives are completed but the third archive remains in progress, the abort will not occur.

When the archival process is successful, there is a message in the Confirm Batch Archive dialog box to indicate that the process is complete. The analyses and samples are listed in the Archives screen. A successful archive has a Status of Restored. The table shows the name, type, size, status and any error message for the restoration.
